The Cargill Fertilizer facility in Savage Minnesota needed to reduce operating costs and increase the volume produced by their barge offloading operation. A conventional cable crane and rope operated bucket had been the offloading method at “Port Cargill” facility for years but – increasing safety concerns, repair costs and poor reliability made it clear that a change was needed.

Ricky Carlson, North American Operations and Engineering Manager for Cargill, explained, “the E-Crane™ is a key piece of equipment in the improvement of our Port Cargill facility. This crane combined with a planned upgrade for the hopper and conveyors will substantially improve the productivity of Port Cargill.”

Lisa Brickey, Terminal Superintendent concurred, “The E-Crane™ design is perfect for an operation such as ours. Its efficient operation is a major step to increasing our volume.”

Crane & Machinery, Inc., the Chicago based E-Crane™ distributor, was responsible for the machine’s sale, logistics and installation. In order to facilitate the purchase they accepted a trade-in from Cargill Fertilizer of an American 7225P Pedestal crane. CM’s Wisconsin Area Manager, Jerry Goggins, managed transport of the crane from its port of entry in Milwaukee, WI to Cargill’s Minnesota site. The installation and subsequent service were professionally completed thanks to the efforts of Chuck Dixon and Steve Suter, two of Crane and Machinery’s lead technicians. “Crane & Machinery’s dedication to product support was a factor in our decision to buy the E-Crane™” added Mr. Carlson.

This E-Crane™ is mounted on a freestanding pedestal and has a 81 feet of outreach. It was commissioned in September 2000 at Port Cargill, which is located on the Minnesota River near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It is the 7th E-Crane™ installation on the US inland waterways.

The “Original” E-Crane™ is engineered and manufactured by Indusign in Belgium and their US affiliate, E-Crane International USA, Inc.
