Going GREEN – all a matter of balance?

With ports the world over going green in a variety of ways, a 34-year-old French idea has brought balance and savings to many with the added advantage of being good for the planet. Ray Dykes explains… The concept of a balanced crane was patented in 1973 by the Seram Group of Perpignan, France, and has been often copied since. Seram remains the world’s largest maker of equilibrium cranes, as they are known, and has around 610 of the revolutionary machines working inland river ports and small ocean ports on every continent. An equilibrium crane has huge advantages when it comes to going...

New E-Crane begins operation at Kanawha River Plant

GLASGOW, W.Va. — Kanawha River Plant is once again receiving much of its coal by barge thanks to the new E-Crane that began operation at the plant in January. From its perch atop a newly-constructed river cell, the E-Crane, or equilibrium crane, uses its large capacity bucket to move coal from barges to the plant’s coal yard. The equipment replaces the plant’s original crane which was retired several years ago.For some time now, we’ve had to rely exclusively on locally-available, truck-delivered coal, which means we often have 100 or so trucks in and out of here a...

E-Cranes prove efficient in bulk material handling

Over 50% of the Electric Energy consumed in the USA is generated by fossil fuel (coal) burning power plants and this is not going to change in the near future. Utility companies burning fossil fuels require a carefully blended mix of coal which is sourced from US mines as well as Latin American and international suppliers to minimize fuel expenses and in order to meet increasingly stringent emission regulations. Now these fossil fuel burning power plants also need to offload limestone for their flue gas desulphurization systems to comply with emission regulations. As most US power...

Mobile Cranes: Technological Balancing Act

The moment of tilt invariably plays a major role where cranes with long extension arms are deployed to lift and move heavy weights. In docks or railway facilities covering a wide area where, for example, bulk materials or scrap metal weighing several tonnes need to be moved, cranes of this type are nevertheless in their element. The Belgian company E-Crane Worldwide in Adegem has already been responding to this sophisticated technical challenge for more than 16 years with its special design “E-Crane®” (equilibrated crane): counterweights are used to bring into equilibrium the major part...

Catering for the coal boom

The global demand for coal, particularly in Asia, shows no signs of abating and is expected to continue at least for the next few years. To cope with this record demand there is a wave of port expansion projects, both at existing terminals and new ones, and along with this is a good demand for coal handling systems. Not only are coal volumes being shipped at high levels, so too are the prices being paid. For example in January 2007 export prices for power station coal being paid at Newcastle, the Australian port which is the world’s largest coal export terminal, were above $50 a tonne....

A Good Deal – on Balance

They look very much out of place. That is often the first impression of an Equilibrium Crane (or balance crane) in action. Being used to ‘straightforward’ design of bulk loading and unloading equipment, the huge ‘block’ of counterweight on the back of the crane makes an awkward sight. But seeing the crane in operation one is made aware of the benefits of the “big hump on the back” and the design starts to make more sense. Due to their build simplicity balance cranes offer a much longer lifespan than other cargo handling equipment. The crane has low...

Recycling Benelux Magazine: E-Crane®

E-Crane® benefits from willingness to replace cable cranes with equilibrium cranes

E-Crane®, of West Virginia, already claims to be benefiting from customer willingness to replace cable cranes with equilibrium cranes, as the latter’s greater flexibility and greater ability to clear out barges combined with adjustable downforce and greater grab position accuracy pay off. Now, the company says, it is bringing new zeal to optimal operations of the equilibrium cranes it markets. Its automatic “boom float”, for example, has been developed to operate during the grab closing phase so that the boom is automatically allowed to move up slightly to achieve better...
