Blockbuster growing larger and larger (The Netherlands)

The largest stones to become part of the future hard seawall will be 40-ton concrete blocks. The Blockbuster will soon be positioning the blocks in the sea at a distance of some 50 m off the shore. They will serve as a breakwater for the stony dune. This will ensure that the Maasvlakte 2 seawall can weather the heaviest storms – ones that occur once every 10,000 years. Recycled Blocks The approximately 20,000 concrete blocks that are required for this operation will come from the existing block dam that protects Maasvlakte 1. A floating crane (backhoe) is currently picking up the blocks...

Finding balance despite the downturn

Ray dikes reports on how the world’s leading makers of balanced cranes appear to have weathered the worst of the economic downturn and are talking of recovery in 2010 and 2011. Recovery might be too strong a word as some have already found new strenght amid the stress and strains of a world in an economic tailspin. But, at least one has shrugged off bankruptcy rumours caused by the scrap market collapse and is trying to bounce back. Balanced cranes get their name from a design which features a parallelogram style boom configuration that allows the machine to be in near perfect balance...

Grappling with a choice of grab unloaders

All grab-type ship unloading systems have differing strenghts and weaknesses. Dockside grab discharge of dry bulk cargo can either be carried out by high-capacity, purpose-built grab gantry unloaders or by lower-capacity (generally), but more versatile slewing cranes, whether fixed, rail-mounted, rubber-tyred or pontoon-mounted. Mobile harbour cranes have long played an important role in mainstream bulk handling. For smaller ships and barges, the “new generation” of mobile (or rail-mounted) hydraulic unloaders, featuring a grabber device attached via a flexible link directly...

In small ports around the world, the ever increasing need to offload bulk materials such as coal and limestone at rates from 300 to 2,000 tons (272 to 1,814 t) per hour and do it as economically as possible calls for modern equipment with greater efficiency than can be provided by many of the older cranes still in operation today. Most of these older cranes are at or near the end of their life cycle; cable replacement is a never ending ordeal; and highly skilled operators are required. Modern cable cranes have hydraulic winches, but are still cable operated. This means there is still cable...
