The Challenge:
Keeping Scrap Moving for Continuous Steel Production

Electric arc furnace steel production depends on a steady supply of scrap baskets, with feedstock required every hour the mill is operating. As Acindar planned to further increase production and efficiency, Harsco Metals needed a reliable scrap handling solution capable of supporting several critical processes across the site. The equipment had to unload incoming trucks, load scrap baskets, and feed a 4000-hp shredder as part of an integrated scrap management operation. The project was also complex and time-critical, making safe erection and on-time delivery essential.

The Solution:
A Turnkey Scrap Handling System for Acindar

E-Crane worked closely with Harsco Metals’ Acindar project team to develop and deliver the cranes on a turnkey basis. Together, the machines provide the flexibility and handling capacity required to support the different stages of scrap preparation and supply for the steel mill.

The solution includes:

Two E-Cranes working together at the Villa Constitución plant, including a 1000B Series E-Crane installed in July 2007 next to the 700 Series E-Crane.
A 1000 Series / 7317 B PD-E with 104 ft / 31.7 m reach, providing the working range required for the scrap management operation.
A 3.92 yd³ / 3 m³ orange peel grab with 8 UStons / 7 Mtons lift capacity for demanding scrap handling applications.
A pedestal-mounted, electrically powered configuration used for unloading trucks, loading scrap baskets, and feeding the 4000-hp shredder.
