The Challenge:
Building Scrap Stockpiles for Efficient Handymax Loading
Van Heyghen Recycling needed to receive, handle, and stockpile large volumes of scrap while ensuring sufficient material was continuously available for loading ocean-going Handymax vessels. This required scrap to be stockpiled to a height of more than 25 meters, while incoming barges and coasters still needed to be unloaded efficiently. The previous operation relied on rented mobile harbor cranes, and local management initially needed to be convinced that an E-Crane could deliver a meaningful improvement. The new solution therefore had to combine high-capacity scrap handling with faster vessel turnaround and lower operating costs.
“It took some effort to convince the local management, that was renting mobile harbor cranes for many years, of the benefits of the E-Crane solution. I promised them an improvement of 25% and I must admit that even I was pleasantly surprised to see that with the E-Crane we are now saving up to 50% in time compared to the old situation with the rental cranes. Three years later a second identical unit was delivered⦔

The Solution:
High-Capacity Scrap Handling from Barge to Handymax
E-Crane provided Van Heyghen Recycling with a high-capacity, rail-mounted solution designed to support the complete scrap handling process from incoming material to ocean-going vessel loading. The installation gives the terminal the reach, lifting capacity, and flexibility required to efficiently manage large scrap volumes across the yard.
