The Challenge:
Replacing High-Maintenance Continuous Ship Unloaders

Sherwin Alumina relied on continuous ship unloaders (CSUs) for its bauxite unloading operation, but constant maintenance requirements and poor reliability were creating major vessel unloading delays. These interruptions resulted in significant demurrage costs and made the existing equipment increasingly expensive to operate. Sherwin needed a dependable replacement capable of handling bauxite from both Handymax and Panamax ships while maintaining high unloading capacity. Cost, reliability, maintenance requirements, and minimizing disruption during installation were all critical considerations.

“I wish all our equipment was working like the E-Cranes!”

The Solution:
Reliable, High-Capacity Bauxite Ship Unloading

E-Crane developed two fully customized ship unloaders around Sherwin Alumina’s operational requirements. The solution was designed to deliver high unloading capacity while addressing the reliability, maintenance, and downtime issues associated with the previous continuous ship unloaders.

The solution includes:

  • Two 2000 Series / 18450 GA-E E-Cranes, each providing 147.5 ft / 45 m reach for unloading Handymax and Panamax vessels.

  • A 17 yd³ / 13 m³ clamshell grab and 32 UStons / 29 Mtons lift capacity per crane, supporting high-capacity bauxite handling.

  • A High Gantry on Rail configuration powered by an 800-hp / 600 kW electric motor, providing an efficient solution for continuous ship unloading operations.

  • Fully assembled delivery using a special heavy-lift shipping method, minimizing downtime at Sherwin Alumina’s dock during installation.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The two E-Cranes achieve an average cycle time of 60 seconds, with peak unloading rates exceeding 1,000 wet metric tons per hour. According to the original case, the new system eliminated demurrage costs while delivering low maintenance costs and minimal downtime.
