MetalX

MetalX installed a 1000C Series E-Crane at its greenfield scrap processing facility in Delta, Ohio, where the equilibrium crane plays a central role in a new 5,000-hp mega-shredder operation designed to move more than 500,000 tons of material per year. The stationary E-Crane stockpiles scrap and feeds the shredder at rates of up to 300 tons per hour.

Applications:

Inland river terminals,Scrap recycling

Attachment:

3,5 m³ / 4.6 yd³ Hydraulic Orange Peel Grapple

Duty Cycle Capacity:

10 Mtons / 11.0 UStons

Lift Capacity

12 Mtons / 13.2 UStons

Location:

Delta, OH, USA

Crane lower:

4 Leg Pedestal

The Challenge:
Keeping a 5,000-hp Mega-Shredder Continuously Supplied

MetalX needed a material handling solution capable of supporting its new high-capacity scrap processing yard and 5,000-hp mega-shredder. With more than 500,000 tons of material expected to move through the operation each year, the crane needed to efficiently stockpile large volumes of scrap while maintaining a continuous supply to the shredder. Extensive reach and high stockpiling capability were particularly important to maximize the amount of material available around the machine. The new solution also needed to provide operators with precise, user-friendly control in a demanding scrap handling environment.

“The E-Crane is the most impressive piece of equipment I have operated: from its long 100-plus feet of reach and massive grapple that will stack scrap over 90 feet, to its user friendly controls.”

Tyler Inbody – Operator, MetalX

“We developed a collaborative relationship with team members of E-Crane through the early planning stages of our mega scrap processing yard in Delta, OH. E-Crane’s commitment to quality during design and fabrication including installation and service has been outstanding.”

Clyde Billips

The Solution:
High-Capacity Scrap Stockpiling and Shredder Feeding

MetalX selected a stationary E-Crane configuration designed to keep large volumes of scrap within reach of the shredder. The combination of long outreach, high stockpiling capability, and a large hydraulic grapple allows the crane to efficiently support both material storage and shredder feeding from a single position.

The solution includes:

  • A 1000C Series Model EC7317 PD-E E-Crane with 31.7 m / 104 ft reach, providing extensive coverage around the shredder operation.

  • A 3.5 m³ / 4.6 yd³ Hydraulic Orange Peel Grapple with 10 Mtons / 11.0 UStons duty cycle capacity for intensive scrap handling.

  • A 4 Leg Pedestal configuration capable of stockpiling scrap up to 90 ft high and providing more than 60,000 m³ / 80,000 yd³ of scrap storage capacity around the crane’s base.

  • A 200 kW / 270 hp Electric Motor, supporting an operation designed to feed the shredder at rates of up to 300 tons per hour.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The E-Crane can store enough scrap within its working range to keep the shredder supplied for more than 65 hours, helping MetalX maintain a continuous high-volume processing operation. With stockpiles reaching 90 ft, more than 60,000 m³ / 80,000 yd³ of storage capacity, and shredder feeding rates of up to 300 tons per hour, one stationary crane provides both the storage density and material flow required for the new mega-shredder facility.
