CITIC Pacific Mining

CITIC Pacific Mining operates two 3000 Series E-Cranes aboard the Magdragon II Floating Transfer Station as part of the Sino Iron Ore Project in Western Australia. Operating 24/7, the E-Cranes transfer magnetite concentrate from ocean-going barges into 112,000 DWT Baby Cape vessels, with the floating terminal handling more than 14 million tons of material per year.

The Challenge:
High-Volume Offshore Magnetite Transfer Around Draft Restrictions

The Sino Iron Ore Project, Australia’s largest magnetite mining and processing operation, required an efficient way to transfer large volumes of magnetite concentrate to ocean-going vessels. At Cape Preston, the available draft means larger 112,000 DWT Baby Cape vessels must be loaded at the outer anchorage rather than directly in port. This requires magnetite to be transported by ocean-going barges from the port and transferred offshore. With annual volumes exceeding 14 million tons, the floating transfer operation must deliver consistently high throughput while operating around the clock in demanding offshore conditions.

“The biggest Floating Transfer Station in the world, handling well over 14 million tons of material per year!”

The Solution:
High-Capacity Floating Transfer for the Sino Iron Ore Project

CITIC Pacific Mining uses the Magdragon II, a 130 x 28 x 6.5 m Floating Transfer Station, to create a high-capacity offshore link between the port and deep-water anchorage. Two E-Cranes provide the operating speed, lifting capacity, and reliability required for continuous magnetite transshipment.

The solution includes:

  • Two 3000 Series E-Cranes aboard the Magdragon II, unloading magnetite concentrate from ocean-going barges into 112,000 DWT Baby Cape vessels.

  • A 10.5 m³ clamshell grab with 34 tons lift capacity on each E-Crane, configured for high-volume magnetite handling.

  • A fixed pedestal on barge configuration, integrated into the 130 x 28 x 6.5 m Floating Transfer Station for continuous offshore operations.

  • A Floating Transfer Station with a 4,000-ton-per-hour design loading rate, while the individual E-Cranes are each capable of handling more than 2,500 tons per hour.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

Magdragon II operates 24/7 and has achieved monthly loading volumes of 1.5 million tons, with more than 14 million tons handled annually. Daily loading rates of 65,000 tons have been achieved, allowing 112,000 DWT Baby Cape vessels to be loaded in well under 48 hours.
