American Shredder

American Shredder installed a 700B Series E-Crane at its facility in Fort Worth, Texas, to feed a 3,000 hp high-infeed shredder from a stationary position. With less than two acres of available land, the fixed, electric-powered E-Crane provides the reach and stockpiling capability needed to maximize limited yard space while reducing operating and maintenance costs.

The Challenge:
Maximizing Scrap Handling Capacity on Less Than Two Acres

American Shredder operates within a compact scrap yard with less than two acres of land, making efficient use of available space essential. The facility also uses a high-infeed shredder with a scrap chute, rather than a conventional low-infeed belt, requiring a material handler capable of reaching and feeding the elevated shredder. At the same time, the machine needed to provide operators with clear visibility and precise control when positioning scrap. American Shredder also wanted to reduce the operating and maintenance costs associated with conventional diesel-powered, traveling material handlers.

The Solution:
Stationary Scrap Handling with Maximum Reach

American Shredder selected a fixed E-Crane configuration capable of serving both the scrap pile and shredder from a single position. This eliminates the need for the machine to travel while taking advantage of the E-Crane’s reach, elevated operator position, precise controls, and electric drive.

The solution includes:

  • A 700B Series Model EC4290 E-Crane, installed in a stationary position to feed American Shredder’s 3,000 hp shredder.

  • High stockpiling capability, allowing scrap to be piled significantly higher than with conventional material handlers and reducing the amount of land required for scrap storage.

  • A high main pivot and elevated operator position, providing excellent visibility into the high-infeed shredder and across the entire scrap yard, combined with ergonomic multifunction joysticks for precise placement and proportional control.

  • Electric-powered operation and a fixed configuration that eliminates traveling gear, reducing operating costs and addressing a component that had previously required significant maintenance.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The E-Crane was successfully installed and up and running in less than two weeks. Its ability to reach the entire scrap pile and shredder from one stationary position eliminates the need for traveling gear, while higher stockpiling makes more efficient use of American Shredder’s less-than-two-acre facility. The electric drive also provides higher efficiency and lower operating costs compared with typical diesel-powered equipment, while American Shredder has experienced reduced maintenance costs.
