The Challenge:
Building an Efficient Material Flow for Expanded Steel Production
ArcelorMittal Calvert’s transformation into a full steelmaking facility required expanded material handling infrastructure capable of supporting high volumes of raw materials and scrap. At the river dock, material needed to be unloaded efficiently from barges and continuously fed into the yard, requiring both mobility and long outreach. In the scrap yard, sorted material had to be stockpiled and transferred into heavy-haul trucks for delivery to the melt shop. The handling system also needed to support the facility’s new electric arc furnace (EAF), capable of producing approximately 1.5 million tons per year, while eliminating the need for additional mobile material handlers in the scrap yard.
The Solution:
Four E-Cranes Supporting the Material Flow from River Dock to Melt Shop
ArcelorMittal Calvert implemented four 1000C Series E-Cranes across two key areas of the facility. Combining mobile crawler-mounted machines at the river dock with stationary pedestal-mounted cranes in the scrap yard creates a material handling system tailored to the requirements of each stage of the process.
