The Challenge:
Replacing an Aging Barge Unloading System

Cargill Fertilizer needed to reduce operating costs and increase the volume handled by its barge offloading operation at Port Cargill. For years, the facility had relied on a conventional cable crane with a rope-operated bucket to unload bulk materials from barges. Increasing safety concerns, rising repair costs, and poor equipment reliability made it clear that the existing system needed to be replaced. Cargill therefore required a dependable bulk material handling solution that could support higher productivity while improving the efficiency of the overall operation.

“The E-Crane is a key piece of equipment in the improvement of our Port Cargill facility. This crane combined with a planned upgrade for the hopper and conveyors will substantially improve the productivity of Port Cargill.”

Ricky Carlson

The Solution:
A More Efficient Approach to Barge Unloading

E-Crane provided Cargill with a purpose-built solution designed to make barge unloading more reliable, efficient, and cost-effective. The new installation replaced the aging cable crane while giving Port Cargill the performance and flexibility needed to support higher-volume bulk handling operations.

The solution includes:

  • A 1000 Series / 7248 PD-E E-Crane with 81 ft / 24.8 m reach, providing the working range required for bulk material offloading from barges.

  • A 7.1 yd³ / 5.4 m³ grab and 10 UStons / 9.1 Mtons lift capacity for reliable bulk handling.

  • A free-standing pedestal configuration powered by a 200-hp / 160 kW electric motor, providing an efficient alternative to the previous conventional cable crane.

  • High-speed barge unloading performance, with Cargill reporting a 31-second cycle while direct transferring a salt barge only two days after commissioning.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The E-Crane helped Cargill address the safety, reliability, and repair-cost issues associated with its previous barge unloading equipment while supporting its goal of increasing throughput. Just two days after commissioning, the operation achieved a 31-second cycle while direct transferring a salt barge, demonstrating the productivity potential of the new system.
