The Challenge:
High-Volume Offshore Magnetite Transfer Around Draft Restrictions
The Sino Iron Ore Project, Australiaās largest magnetite mining and processing operation, required an efficient way to transfer large volumes of magnetite concentrate to ocean-going vessels. At Cape Preston, the available draft means larger 112,000 DWT Baby Cape vessels must be loaded at the outer anchorage rather than directly in port. This requires magnetite to be transported by ocean-going barges from the port and transferred offshore. With annual volumes exceeding 14 million tons, the floating transfer operation must deliver consistently high throughput while operating around the clock in demanding offshore conditions.
“The biggest Floating Transfer Station in the world, handling well over 14 million tons of material per year!”
The Solution:
High-Capacity Floating Transfer for the Sino Iron Ore Project
CITIC Pacific Mining uses the Magdragon II, a 130 x 28 x 6.5 m Floating Transfer Station, to create a high-capacity offshore link between the port and deep-water anchorage. Two E-Cranes provide the operating speed, lifting capacity, and reliability required for continuous magnetite transshipment.
