Kencana Muria Jaya

Kencana Muria Jaya (KMJ) operates two identical floating 3000 Series E-Cranes at the Muara Berau outer anchorage in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, loading coal from barges into Panamax and Capesize vessels. Following the successful operation of its first E-Crane from 2019, KMJ decided in early 2022 to invest in a second identical floating unit.

The Challenge:
Maintaining High Coal Loading Rates in Challenging Offshore Conditions

KMJ needed a high-capacity floating solution for transferring coal from barges into large ocean-going vessels at the Muara Berau outer anchorage. Offshore conditions create an additional challenge, as wave heights can restrict crane operation and reduce the available loading window. The equipment therefore needed to combine high loading capacity with stable operation, reliability, and efficient energy use. Maintaining productivity in conditions that can force conventional rope cranes to stop operating would provide KMJ with an important competitive advantage.

“E-Crane gives us a distinct competitive advantage! Faster cycle times, more stable operation, lower fuel consumption and less coal spillage.”

The Solution:
Stable and Efficient Floating Coal Transshipment

KMJ selected a floating E-Crane configuration designed for high-volume coal transshipment in demanding offshore conditions. Following the successful performance of the first machine, the company expanded the operation with a second identical unit.

The solution includes:

  • Two identical 3000 Series E-Cranes, with the first entering operation in 2019 and the decision to invest in the second taken in early 2022.

  • A 22 m³ clamshell grab and 30-ton lift capacity, configured for loading coal from barges into Panamax and Capesize vessels.

  • A Fixed Pedestal on barge configuration, with both crane barges built in Batam, where the E-Cranes were installed before being towed to Kalimantan.

  • A floating E-Crane design capable of operating comfortably in wave heights up to 2.5 m, compared with 1.5 m for rope cranes operating in the same area.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The floating E-Cranes provide KMJ with a clear operational advantage through 40% energy savings, excellent reliability, and the ability to continue operating in wave heights up to 2.5 m. Combined with faster cycle times and stable operation, the system has achieved daily coal loading rates of more than 25,000 tons.
