The Challenge:
Replacing an Aging Crane That Was Holding Back Production

Kinder Morgan’s existing diesel-powered cable crane was creating both operational and maintenance challenges at the Port Sutton terminal. The machine consumed extensive amounts of diesel fuel, while increasingly frequent maintenance was beginning to interfere with production. Repairs were also expensive, adding to the overall cost of operating the old crane. Kinder Morgan therefore needed a more reliable and economical ship unloading solution capable of increasing capacity while reducing downtime.

“Our old cable crane presented various operational and maintenance issues. For one thing, we used an extensive amount of diesel fuel. The E-Crane® uses electric power, so we’ve gained a major cost savings there. Also, the maintenance of the old crane was beginning to interfere with our production, and the repairs were often expensive.”

“The clamshell grab gives excellent penetration into the fertilizer with maximum fill.”

“We have been extremely pleased with E-Crane® equipment and personnel right form the get-go and through all phases of the project.”

The Solution:
Electric Ship Unloading for Port Sutton

E-Crane worked closely with Kinder Morgan and its engineering firm to develop the new ship unloading solution, providing complete and detailed drawings throughout the project. The selected 1500 Series configuration addressed the terminal’s requirements while replacing the maintenance-intensive diesel cable crane with an electric equilibrium crane.

The solution includes:

  • A 1500 Series / EC9317 PD-E E-Crane, purpose-selected for ship unloading at Kinder Morgan’s Port Sutton dry bulk fertilizer terminal.

  • A 7.65 m³ Hydraulic Clamshell Grab, providing excellent penetration into the fertilizer and maximizing grab fill.

  • A Pedestal configuration, creating a dedicated ship unloading solution for the Tampa terminal.

  • A 225 kW Electric motor, replacing the extensive diesel consumption of the previous cable crane and providing Kinder Morgan with significant energy cost savings.

BUSINESS OUTCOME

The E-Crane increased ship unloading capacity while dramatically decreasing downtime and maintenance costs compared with the previous diesel-powered cable crane. The first ships unloaded after installation went smoothly, and Kinder Morgan specifically highlighted savings from electric power, improved equipment reliability, and the ability to unload a ship that could not have been handled with the old crane.
